Virginie Loveling

Virginie Loveling was a remarkable Belgian writer who lived from 1836 (17/05/1836 - Nevele) to 1923 (1/12/1923 - Ghent). Together with her sister Rosalie Loveling, she formed an influential literary duo in the 19th century. Her literary contributions were diverse and included novels, poetry and essays, but she is best known for her realistic prose. Loveling's work often reflects the social and societal changes of her time, and she is praised for her accurate observations of everyday life and human nature. Her literary legacy has had a lasting influence on Flemish literature and remains an important part of the Belgian literary canon.

The Ghent University Library has several manuscripts by this female author in its collection. A number of manuscripts are already available online, including sketches, novellas and translations of poetry. The war diary 1914-1918 by Virginie Loveling, recognised as a Flemish Masterpiece, is highlighted separately.
