HILO 16mm collectie te zien tijdens 'Film-Olympiade: sportieve kortfilms'

In 2024, the Boekentoren’s collection was enriched with some 900 16mm films and the accompanying theses from the Higher Institute for Physical Education (HILO) at Ghent University. This comprises the archive (1960–1990) of the Human Movement Analysis Laboratory: unique recordings that provide insight into the scientific study of sport in Ghent.

All original 16mm films are being digitised by meemoo, the Flemish Institute for Archives. Cinematek, the Royal Belgian Film Archive, is responsible for the long-term preservation of the film reels. The accompanying theses have already found their way to the Boekentoren, where they have been digitised and can be consulted at lib.ugent.be.

During Heritage Day 2025, ‘Move with the Past’, the Boekentoren, in collaboration with the department, organised a day full of activities centred on the unique HILO collection, including a fascinating documentary and a demonstration of motion analysis by Emeritus Professor Dr De Clercq and Professor Dr Segers.

Now the films are back in the spotlight, this time on the big screen. On Tuesday 29 September 2026 at 8.30 pm, Film-Plateau at KASKcinema will open its film series with ‘Film-Olympiade: Sport Short Films’. The programme brings together sports-themed silent films and audio material, and concludes with a selection of sports science motion films from the HILO collection. The screening will be introduced by members of Film-Plateau and accompanied by live music.
