Jan Vercruysse - Vie d’Artiste

Jan Vercruysse, Mirror, 1984

Vercruysse was an important figure on the Belgian and international art scene in the 1980s and 1990s. He gained international recognition with the ‘Tombeaux’ series. In 2009, a retrospective exhibition of Jan Vercruysse at Museum M Leuven brought renewed attention to an artist who gave a major impulse to the‘ reinvention’ of sculpture in the 1980s and 1990s. Vie d'Artiste is the second chapter of this project, ten years after his last exhibition at Xavier Hufkens. This chapter focuses on his work as a portrait of the artist.

Jan Vercruysse's archive and library were donated to the Ghent University Library in February 2022 for proper preservation and accessibility for research.
As caretakers of the Jan Vercruysse Archive we are of course happy to participate in this exhibition and lend some of the archival items.
